halex - local history
Halex xylonite factory stood where Tesco and the neighbouring industrial estate are.
It was the largest employer in Waltham Forest and provided jobs to the majority of Highams Park residents since 1895. Mirrors, trinket boxes and table tennis balls were the main production. Halex ping-pong balls supplied to the international market since 19th century and also took part in WWII. The business closed its door in 1971, however, it remains in many locals' memories and heart.
